About KIMC

The Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) was established in 1961 and was named as the then Voice of Kenya Training School.

Its main purpose was to train electronic engineering and technicians for the then, Kenya Broadcasting Service (KBS), that was later rebranded in 1962 as the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). KBC was then nationalized in 1964, and changed its brand to Voice of Kenya (VOK).

Collaborations

The Institute collaborates with a number of institutions to ensure high hands on skills to the learners and knowledge of how the industry operates.

 

The institute collaborates with the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at The University of Nairobi in offering the Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Production degree program. The program is highly specialized and offers students an opportunity to specialize in Broadcast Production courses for four years.

The specializations within the program are: Radio production option; Television production option; Film production option. The first cohort o of the program graduated in December 2013.

The Kenya Institute of Mass Communication(KIMC) and Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) collaboration sets out a framework for conducting the Bachelor's Degree course in Kiswahili and Communication Jointly.The degree course is for KISWAHILI practitioners destined for both Electronic and Print media.For any media practioner aspiring or intending to enhance his/her capability of practicing journalism using Kiswahili as a language of communication,then this is Degree program of choice.

This is a commercial arm of the institute that offers services to external clients in order to generate revenue to support training activities. The services offered by the centre include:

  • Film/ video production services which include: location filming; editing; dubbing.
  • Printing services which include: magazines; newsletters; calendars; booklets; posters; fact sheets.

  • Tv and Radio Studio
