Learning at Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) is set to undergo a great revolution due to the ongoing technology infrastructure expansion.

Already, computer labs have undergone a major face lift that has seen addition of desk top computers, better and new work station furniture, installations of monitor screens and projectors.

In an exclusive interview with these writers, the institute’s Head of I.C.T Mr. Oscar Omondi said his department has put in place elaborate plans in transforming the institute into a fully-fledged I.C.T center.

“As a department, we are keen on incorporating latest technology in learning for both lecturers and students. To this end we are introducing audio visual effect in learning process to enhance student-lecturer interaction.” Said Mr. Omondi.

He revealed that the process will be rolled out in different phases. So far phase one has seen upgrade in computer labs 2 and 3 as well as the meetings board room.

Mr. Omondi added that the current job market is in need of fully baked workforce and observed that this is one of the motivation behind the initiative.

“Current trends in the job market puts I.C.T at the center of the learning process. Online journalism and other aspects such as proposal presentation demand that we equip our students with practical skills” observed Mr. Omondi.

He also noted that Wi-Fi` provided to students is geared towards ensuring they carry out their research on the internet with ease. However, he cautioned students against using the service irresponsibly but rather put it into useful academic work.

“Another aspect put in place is the introduction of Google apps for education. Through this, all students have been issued with email accounts with Google domain that makes it easy for students to work and submit assignments online even during holidays. Students can also seek for more information from their lecturers interactively out of classroom confines,” stated the Head of ICT.

 Lecturers have lauded the move observing that it has enhanced better learning environment.

According to Ms. Emma Kariuki, an editing and desk top publishing lecturer in the institute, the use of technology has truly aided on making her teaching effective.

“I can now use the new projectors to display notes for my students to write hence saving time and can scan my teaching aids for example a business card and afterwards ask the students to design it,” she noted.

Ms. Kariuki also observed that the internet provided has now enabled her students to watch certain demonstrations from YouTube channels and this has made teaching very effective especially with classes that have a large number of students and a lot of lessons can now be taught within limited time.

However, the lecturer noted that some computers need repair and replacement of certain devices like speakers and keyboards and hence urged the ICT department to look into the issue.

Other than that she was very appreciative of the transformation.

 “We appreciate the ICT Department for the good work they have done and we are very thankful for the new projectors, Wi-Fi, new computers and new organization of the labs that has been put in place,” remarked Ms. Kariuki.

Students have also noted the improvements and are very appreciative. Amos Wasike, a second year broadcast journalism student said he and his classmates can now easily finish his editing assignments on time thanks to more computers at their disposal.

 “With the Wi-Fi available, doing research on the internet is least of my worries now,” added Wasike

Editor Wakesho another second year Journalism student hailed the ICT department for the notable renovations of the computer labs.

 “We are now enjoying and finding lessons in the labs more fun and enticing,” she noted.
